Terms of service

The rules for using this site, in plain language.

Draft — not yet reviewed by a lawyer

This page accurately describes how the site currently works, and is written to be a useful starting point for legal review. It has not had that review yet, and must not be relied on as it stands.

What this site is

Buy Stuff Direct is a place to advertise things for sale and to find them. We are not party to any sale. When you agree to buy something here, that agreement is between you and the other person. We do not hold the money, inspect the goods, or guarantee that either side does what they said they would.

Your account

You need an account to post an advert, message a seller or comment. You must give accurate details, keep your password to yourself, and be old enough to enter a contract where you live. One person, one account.

You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has got into it, change your password and tell us.

What you may post

You must have the right to sell what you list, and your advert must be honest about it. You may not post:

  • Anything illegal to sell where you or the buyer are — including weapons, drugs, stolen goods, counterfeits, and protected wildlife.
  • Anything you do not actually have, or do not intend to sell at the price shown.
  • Adverts placed in the wrong category to get more views, or the same item posted repeatedly to stay near the top.
  • Someone else's photographs or description without their permission.
  • Other people's personal information.
  • Abuse, harassment, or content that targets people for who they are.

You keep ownership of what you post. By posting it you give us permission to display it on the site and to show it in search results, which is what publishing an advert means.

Comments and messages

Questions posted under an advert are public and stay visible. Sellers may remove comments from their own adverts, and so may our moderators. Private messages are for arranging a sale — not for advertising something else.

What things cost

Posting an advert is free, and we take no commission on what you sell. We charge only for promotion: putting an advert above others in search results for a set period, and the Business plan. The current prices are on the pricing page.

A promotion runs for the period you paid for and then stops. Your advert stays up for its full term either way. Buying a second period while the first is still running extends it rather than running two at once.

Because a promotion is delivered immediately and used up as it runs, it cannot generally be refunded once it has started. If something goes wrong at our end — the promotion did not run, or ran for less time than you paid for — tell us and we will put it right.

Suspending and removing things

We may remove an advert or a comment, or suspend an account, if it breaks these rules. We suspend rather than delete wherever we can, so you keep your content and can ask us to look again. Serious cases — fraud in particular — may be passed to the police.

Where we stand on liability

We provide the site as it is. We do not promise it will never be unavailable, and we are not responsible for what other users do, for what is in their adverts, or for how a sale turns out.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything on this page.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms we will update this page and the date at the top. Continuing to use the site after that means the new terms apply.

Cookies we would like to set

The site needs a few cookies to work at all, and those are always on. We would also like to set cookies that tell us which partner or member sent you here, so they get credit for it. Those are up to you. What each cookie does
